Getting my annual epistle done while it is still January must be a historical event! We’ve all been very busy, as usual.
Rebecca spent the first part of the year finishing up her job as a community organizer at SEIU in Chicago. When her six month contract was up, she stayed in Chicago for a few months, and spent some of the summer in Toronto as she worked on figuring out what to do next with herself. In August, Rebecca moved back to Los Angeles (staying with mom and dad temporarily) and began the process of applying for Master’s programs in several different universities across the country. She took a couple of weeks off to take part in the “If I Were a Rich Man” tour: travelling across the country with a group of fellow activists to advocate for tax fairness prior to the election. Back at home again, Rebecca’s college applications are now in; interviews and tests are happening; and we should know in the next couple of months where Rebecca will be headed next. Her plan is to get a Masters in Education with an eye toward becoming a teacher, and eventually transitioning into curriculum reform.
Stephen continues with teaching, playing with many different groups; serving on the Board of the Theater Musician’s Association and committees of the Musician’s Union; and maintaining several websites.
Elise had another full season at the Academy for New Musical Theatre, including the usual concerts and readings, as well as the biennial BIZ OF THE MUSICAL THEATRE BIZ Conference, and the world premiere production of the new musical A RING IN BROOKLYN. Elise directed the 15 Minute Musicals again this season – four in all – under the title of MAN V. MACHINE. The summer also included directing and playing a role in the reading of the new musical MARY MARIE as well as the premiere of a new musical written by ANMT’s own Scott Guy – about Frank Lloyd Wright being hired by LA’s Aline Barnsdall to build her home on Olive Hill – the show is call DER FRANKLLOYDWRIGHTENLIEDER. Elise ended the year by directing a reading of a new Xmas show at the North Shore Theatre in Boston, which gave her an excuse to come home via Toronto where she was joined by Stephen and Rebecca for a long over-due family visit.
The year included lots of other events like Curry Club lunches, a seder with the Solomon/Sokoloff’s in Long Beach; and the wedding of Fern and Sam’s daughter Ona to Eric. But the most exciting event was Stephen and Elise’s trip to Europe to celebrate 30 years of marriage. We visited Venice, Vienna, Prague, Nice, and Barcelona – travelling by train and staying mostly in apartments rather than hotels. We had a most amazing time!
All in all, it was a busy, exciting, and fulfilling year for all of us – and, we hope, for all of you!
